Changes for Finance, Town Treasurer and Town Attorney

Mallozzi's first days as New Canaan's First Selectman included new appointments and new assignments.

"It's been a good week, it's exactly what I thought it would be," said , "it wasn't like I got in here and the pace was overwhelming."

Sharing his first impressions in his new office recently, he credited a good start to the personnel who populate New Canaan's town government and to the residents. He also credited his four years as a member of the , which he said helped tremendously, "It's great to know the players." 

His first order of business he explained, was to meet as many of the people who make up town government as possible. He said this included a meeting of all department chairs and another with the commission chairs, staff, administrators and the police force and visits to the Parks Department and Waste Water Treatment facility.

These meetings he said were a great opportunity for him to lay out his goals, reiterate his "open door policy," to hear their goals and for them to interact, and coordinate with each other as well.

  • Assessing the : Mallozzi said he has spoken with current members Mary Cody and Susan LaPerla. He said that while he will not reappoint LaPerla, she is a valued contributor who he hopes and expects will serve elsewhere in town government. He is submitting  and  for appointment.
  • A meeting with and . "We are going to expect more of Don and Don was more than happy to accommodate us," he said. , he said. Mallozzi, Conrad and Hersam will also hold monthly meetings. "He was extremely amenable to meeting those (additional) responsibilities, and I'm defining those responsibilities for now," he said.
  • "Changing things up with the " Mallozzi said. He plans bi-weekly meetings with Jarboe and bi-weekly reports from any departments using legal services to ensure, "a little more gatekeeping," he said. He added that he will be asking several law firms, including Jarboe's, to assess New Canaan's needs.
  • Streamlining the budget process. Selectmen, Town Council and BoF will sit for all departmental presentations (with the exception of the Board of Education) together, over two nights, Jan. 10 and 11. All presentations will be available on the iPads distributed to board members. Question and answer sessions with each department, before each board, will occur in the weeks following.
  • Meetings with all commission members regarding staffing. He said he will be meeting, "for fifteen minutes," as well with individuals who have expressed an interest, or whose names have been submitted by others, to potentially serve.
  • Plans to Increase the utilization of the Utility and Conservation Committees.

His top priority moving forward? "," he said. He expects the renovation will stay within the current footprint, but result in an ADA compliant, more efficient building. He does not envision offices, including those currently outside of Town Hall, changing their current locations.
