College Hunks Hauling Your Junk

The College Hunks are now in Connecticut hauling, moving and serving New Canaan.

Fabio and Don Juan may show up to your door in bright green polos to haul your junk away if you call College Hunks Hauling Junk, but that’s not the point of the service...and that’s not why you called them anyways, right?

HUNKS actually stands for Honest Uniformed Nice Knowledgeable Students - college age men that are there for the heavy lifting to keep the stress off your back and out of your mind when getting junk (or just heavy items) out of the house.

The Florida-based company, initiated in 2003 by a few college buddies with muscle power and a big van, has blossomed over the last decade into an entrepreneurial dream with nearly 50 locations nationwide.

The one location in Connecticut, operated in Stamford by Stamford resident Thomas Yewdell, was established in June and serves New Canaan along with towns in Westchester and Fairfield County.

Yewdell, who candidly refers to himself as the professor, has been an entrepreneur for the last 17 years and says there’s so much more to this business than hauling and moving stuff.

“You’ll learn more here than in any internship,” said Yewdell, “You have sweat equity here. You’re going to want to learn because it’s yours and you care. You need disciple and you get out what you put in. It’s a fun place to work though. A few guys have already gone on to start their own franchise.”

Yewdell lives up to his title of Professor as he will role play with his employees in order to teach them how to do a presentation with realtors and how to navigate the business that is entrepreneurship.

One of the keys to success is attitude, says Yewdell.

“They’re respectful, they listen and they exceed your expectations. We meet some cool people, it’s a fun place to work and it reflects in our attitude. Going forward, employees will need to be able to donate some of their time to charity, whether it’s setting up tables or hauling away trash,” said Yewdell.

Sixty percent of what the HUNKS pick up is recycled and much of what is left can be donated to charity.

Not everything that is hauled away is junk, though, and movers are sensitive to this.

“There’s a psychological aspect to some of this ‘junk.’ There’s emotional value to it and sometimes you need to walk them through it. You can’t just haul it and throw it in the truck. We treat their belongings with the respect that they give to it and help them through it. These guys have compassion,” said Yewdell.

Whether it’s clearing out the kids’ rooms after they’ve graduate from college and moved on, moving to a new home, or there’s just a few things to give to charity, College Hunks can make the move with their shiny new equipment and sweet movers. If you’re too busy to be at home during the move, no worries. According to Yewdell, his movers will take care of your belongings while you take care of other business.

College Hunks Hauling Junk was ranked #156 in the Inc. 500's Fastest Growing Companies and also featured by MSNBC and CNN. Check out MSNBC's video of the guys on YouTube.
