Marinelli to Face Former Assistant When the Rams Meet the Mustangs Tonight

Mustangs coach Della Volpe was Marinelli's assistant for 10 years, and helped build the Rams powerhouse offensive program.

It will be teacher vs. pupil for the second time when the undefeated New Canaan football team visits Fairfield Warde on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Lou Marinelli, the dean of all FCIAC coaches, is in his 30th season at New Canaan. His former assistant, Duncan Della Volpe, took over the Warde program last season.

Della Volpe spent 10 years as an assistant under Marinelli and, as the team's offensive coordinator, installed the offense that helped the Rams begin their current run of four consecutive state championships.

Della Volpe will have his work cut out Friday as New Canaan appears to be as strong as ever. The Rams barely broke a sweat in their first three games this season, routing Bassick (41-0), Trinity Catholic (48-8) and Ludlowe (35-0).

They actually had to let up in those contests because of the specter of the CIAC's 50-point rule in which a coach faces a one-game suspension if his team wins a game by more than 50 points.

Della Volpe is facing a rebuilding job at Warde, whose football program hasn't been as successful as the program Marinelli built.  Last year he guided the Mustangs to a 5-5 record, which included a 35-13 loss to his former boss in New Canaan. The two men have remained close friends even after Della Volpe took the Warde job.

Warde (2-1) is coming off a 31-7 victory over Bassick in which Mustangs senior running back Alex Delaney rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns against the Lions.

The Mustangs will have to contend with New Canaan's potent offense, which is led by junior quarterback Matt Milano and all-state senior receiver Kevin Macari, who scored three touchdowns in the first six minutes against Ludlowe. They came on an interception return, punt return and pass reception.

Della Volpe won his seventh game at Warde last week, leaving him 248 wins behind Marinelli, who has a career mark of 255-89-6. Marinelli spent two seasons as the coach at Yorktown High School before starting at New Canaan in 1981.

Marinelli is second on the wins' list among all active high school football coaches in Connecticut, trailing only West Haven's Ed McCarthy.  He has guided New Canaan to eight state champions and four FCIAC crowns.

Since the start of the 2006 season,  the Rams boast a record of 48-5.
