New Canaan To Face Naugatuck In Class L State Playoffs

Rams are seeking a fifth consecutive state championship

New Canaan is only the No. 6 seed in the CIAC Class L playoffs, but it's hard to imagine the Rams being the sixth-best team in the division.

Gunning for a fifth consecutive state championship, New Canaan (9-1) plays at No. 3 Naugatuck (9-1) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Naugatuck won the Naugatuck Valley League title Thursday, handing Ansonia its first loss of the season with an 38-20 victory.

The winner of the New Canaan-Naugatuck clash takes on either No. 2 Hand (9-1) or No. 7 North Haven (9-1) in the semifinals on Saturday.

In the other half of the bracket, top seed Masuk (10-0) hosts No. 8 Bristol Eastern (9-1) and No. 5 Darien (10-1) plays at No. 4 Wethersfield (9-1).

The only way New Canaan and Darien can meet again is if they both reach the state finals.

The Rams needed a 42-14 win over Darien just to get into the state playoffs, but their offense has looked unstoppable since a 28-27 loss to St. Joseph on Oct. 23. In four wins since, New Canaan is averging just under 46 points per game.

New Canaan has won nine CIAC state championships, tied for the second-most since the playoff format was adopted in 1976.

I watched the New Canaan-Darien "Turkey Bowl" game on Cablevision's MSG Varsity on channel 14. MSG Varsity does a really fine job, making High School football look and feel like a big time college or NFL game. They are really good.
However, the announcers in the Thanksgiving game never discussed or reported that several DHS players had been suspended for vandalism at NCHS on Tuesday night. Throughout the game, the announcers spoke about the DHS team being "decimated by injuries" in its previous game. Where was the honest reporting in MSG Varsity's coverage? Cablevision's reported that the chief reason the DHS team was not at full strength was "injuries." Not that its players were thrown off the team for the remainder of the season for breaking the law and showing remarkably bad judgment and poor sportsmanship.
I believe the DHS school administration and NCHS school administration did a fantastic job acting quickly, fairly and in the best interests of students in a very transparent way. Too bad MSG/ Cablevision didn't report on the game in an equally adult manner. In fact the only mention of "suspensions" I heard in the broadcast was by the DHS coach in a post game interview.

Shortpants, you are right on target! We watched the game on MSG as well and were very dismayed at the commentators' repeatedly mentioning all of the injuries, at one point stating that the DHS side-line looked like a M.A.S.H. unit. Kudos to Coach Marinelli (of NC) would said they would have rather won against a team at full strength but that Darien was hampered by injuries and suspensions. Had to wait for the post-game interview for the suspensions to be mentioned. It seems they also did not air the apology that was read to the fans before the game started.

All just goes to show that the media really does filter the information we get.

My error, it was Coach Marinelli who used the forbidden word....

It was definitely odd. It must have seemed odd, even to those who hadn't heard what had happened. A bunch of unnamed players had gotten "injured" since Darien's previous game. I guess MSG didn't want to get mixed up in the situation. but the biggest problem I had with their broadcast was the way the announcers kept working themselves into a lather about some of the players. that kind of misplaced adulation could be one of the reasons a few players got out of hand the other day. Besides, the way they were fawning over the players seemed a little creepy to me. Unintentionally so, I'm sure, but they really should tone the "man crush" aspect of sportscasting down at the high school level.

It appeared the MSG is there to promote the players and not announce the game. I find that they will talk over plays and penalties without any mention of what is happening on the field unless there is something dramatic (e.g., touchdown, interception)

I think MSG is still trying to compensate for folding up their cameras at last year's New Canaan-Greenwich game (11/6/2009) at Greenwich. The Cardinals had a two-touchdown lead with less than 9 minutes left in the game, so MSG - assuming the game was over - took off. Luckily the last 8 minutes were captured here:

I agree that the MSG announcers are over the top crazy, but love the HD coverage; we just turn down the sound.
