Ten-month-old beagle puppy Brandy didn't come when Jennifer Forese called her three dogs in from the yard around noon on Sunday, but she didn't think much of it. The property on Summersweet Ln is fenced in and she usually lets the dogs in and out of the house at their leisure.
Around 5 p.m., after going out for soccer practice and other Sunday afternoon activities, Forese rallied her four sons to look for the puppy. At that point, she thought maybe Brandy had dug a hole under the fence or otherwise snuck out of the yard. Three hours later, still no sign of the puppy. Forese brought her family in to have dinner, finish homework, and get ready for bed, and called the Police Department to say if they found the puppy, who was not wearing a collar, that she was theirs.
As night was starting to set in, Forese took her sons back into the woods behind the house with flashlights for one last search.
"We could hear this faint wimpery bark," Forese said.
As they followed Brandy's cries into the thick woods, they came upon the end of a drain pipe. Apparently, the puppy had climbed through the pipe and landed in a storm basin. Forese and her sons grabbed shovels and started digging to get to the basin, but she was worried they'd just end up hitting solid concrete. She called the police again to say they'd found the dog but couldn't get to her. When the officer arrived, he called in the fire department.
The ordeal ended around midnight after firefighters had lifted the concrete lid off the basin and pulled Brandy out. The 12-pound dog had been standing up to her tummy in about four inches of water for 10 to 12 hours. She was cold and hungry, but otherwise just fine.
"I typically don't let my dogs in my bedroom, but I let her in that night," said Forese.

Sadly, there were no pictures taken when Brandy was pulled out of the basin, but Jennifer Forese says she looked, "very cute."

Another wonderful Fire Dept story. It's a real comfort to know that they are always around to help. Reminds me of the FD's Duck rescue back in 2004 on White Oak Shade and Overlook Dr.
