Talking Turkey Bowl with Coach Marinelli

In which our New Canaan Sports Digest Editors interview Rams Football Coach Lou Marinelli as he prepares for Thursday's Turkey Bowl.

For Coach Marinelli's take on the Turkey Bowl, check out the video accompanying this article.

Patch: Coach, you started out the season strong but suffered a tough loss to St. Joe's. Tell me how you were able to overcome the loss?

Coach Marinelli: I don't know that we have overcome the loss. It was a tough fought game; we weren't ready to play in the beginning. As the game went on, we played some of the best football we played all year. We were under pressure and moving the ball downfield, no timeouts, 53 seconds to go, and then going to score and tie it up. Then to go for the two points at the end, there were as many good things as bad. Certainly it has hurt us with the FCIAC and with the state as well. So I don't know if we are over it.

Patch: A couple of games after that you guys had an unbelievable showing against Greenwich put up a lot of points in a nationally televised game. How did win regain your teams confidence after the devastating loss to St. Joes.

Coach Marinelli: After St. Joe's we played Wilton first and that was our Homecoming and we broke out there. Offensively we have been very fortunate, this might be one of the best offensive teams that I've had. It was important to do that, I think we scored like 47 points against Wilton. Then the next week we had the ESPN game and the kids played wonderful we had like 42 points at the end of the first half. You can never do that against Greenwich, there such a great program, so that certainly helped our confidence. Then we faced Bridegport Central a game that we lost last year and the kids wanted to make a statement and kind of say okay it happened to us now it's going to happen to you this year. So I think that we are playing with a lot of confidence now. You know its unfortunate with the loss that we can't control our own destiny but all we can do is play the games we have in front of us and do the best we can and see where we fall.

Patch: Coach, you have a number of outstanding players this year. Some serious standouts, one player Kevin Macari has had a great season. Talk a little about him and what skills he has that other players in the past might not have had.

Coach Marinelli: Well, he has the whole package! He has size, he is 6'2 215-200 pounds. He is fast, certainly our fastest player and at that size he catches the ball well. He wants the ball in his hands in tight situations. We know that he is going to go up and get the ball. Even if the ball it not that accurate, he is going to go up and make the catch. He has made some circus catches some were unbelievable, plus on defense he has three interceptions with some runbacks. He also returns kicks; he is just an overall great athlete.

Patch: So you see him playing at the college level?

Coach Marinelli:  Without a doubt! He is one of the best receivers that I have had.

Patch: What other players besides Macari have stepped up and maybe surprised you this year?

Coach Marinelli: Like I said I told the kids last night that's it's a team game and its not certainly all about Macari, its not all about Hanratty its not all about Milano or Goodwin or Jack Atchue or anybody really. It's more about us and I think as a team especially offensively they have played very well. But, guys have stepped up and have really done a tremendous job. When you look on the other side what Patrick Newton has done and Connor Kilbane Willie Gould, Joe Costigan it's a tremendous team. That's the thing that's hard for me, I find it hard every year but as we get to this point in the season to lose these kids this family unit that we have football family unit if you will. To see these kids I just want to see how far we can take it, take it as far as we can. I would like to keep it to bad we cant play right through the year.
