Hummer Hits the Road

New Canaan's Karl Chevrolet gets word that the cult fave Hummer is being discontinued.

On Wednesday this past week, GM announced that Hummer was being discontinued. A deal with a Chinese machinery company, Tengzhong, fell through after a year long process. GM decided to "begin the orderly wind-down of Hummer operations." It's a decision New Canaan's Karl Chevrolet can't quite understand. Despite the fact that Hummers are most often thought of as gas-guzzling and expensive behemoths, the brand has a loyal and dedicated following. "The Hummer has always been a niche market that's never been understood by the masses, but people love them," says Leo Karl, president of Karl Chevrolet. "We've done more Hummer business in the last two weeks than in the last two years." Besides, says Karl, there are lots of other cars out there that…

Bank appraisals have long been an integral part of the home buying and selling process. The bank wants to be sure its investment is covered in case you default on the loan. On the other hand, the buyer is thinking "Let's bring in the expert and make sure we're not spending too much on this property." An appraiser has no vested interest in what amount the house sells for.  It's easy for them to step in and provide the information to help everyone make their decisions. Lax bank appraisal standards were identified as …

Teen Center's Café Comes to Life

The Apple Cart Food Company brings teens their after-school snack.

There's ping pong and Nintendo Wii, but until now the Outback Teen Center has been missing one key element for an after-school hangout: food. At long last the kitchen and dinner counter installed when the teen center was first built in 2001 is seeing some action.  "I walked in and was like "ahhhhhh, give me food!" said Jessica Pickering, as she smelled the teenage fare being prepared by Apple Cart Food Company Friday.  Ahmad Aziz, who also runs the snack bar at Mead Park, the Lake Club, and the lunch program at St. Aloysius School, has started cooking up a familiar menu that includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken nuggets and pizza. Aziz says the café will also have weekly specials such as a turkey melt or grilled chicken sandwich.  Eighth-…
