Full Slates for Fall Legislative Elections

Incumbent Republican state Sen. Scott Frantz was nominated May 14 to run for a third term representing Greenwich and parts of New Canaan and Stamford.

Races for Greenwich's delegation in Hartford will be just that — a race. For the first time in recent memory, residents will have a choice in the November election as the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee will field four candidates to challenge the dominating Republican delegation. DTC Chair Frank Farricker said Tuesday, "The really important thing is that for the first time we are running candidates for every position and I think that redistricting has leveled the playing field and that will be a good thing for us." And Farricker ruled out any run for himself. Earlier this year, he said he was considering a run for the 150th District House seat held by Republican Lile Gibbons who is retiring. "I am in the middle of buying a new …

The Subtle Differences Between Meek, Obsitnik

Republican candidates for the CT's Fourth Congressional District, Chris Meek and Steve Obsitnik, are both vying to become the Party's choice to run against Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat who has held the seat for the past two terms.

Republicans will go to the polls tomorrow to vote for their presidential candidate to face Barack Obama in November. But with Rick Santorum suspending his campaign (he's still on the ballot), and Newt Gringrich and Ron Paul considered long-shots, at best, Mitt Romney is now the "de facto" nominee for president for the GOP — thus turnout at the polls is expected to be low. Voters in the Fourth Congressional District are more interested in the outcome of the tight race between Republican candidates Chris Meek and Steve Obsitnik, who are both vying to become the Party's choice to run against Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat who has held the House seat for the past two terms. Both men say they are the Party's best shot at defeating Himes, as they …

Survey: McMahon Leads GOP Primary, Dems Still Win

A Quinnipiac poll breaks down the U.S. Senate race and Republican presidential primary.

A Quinnipiac University poll shows Linda McMahon leads former U.S. Rep Christopher Shays by a 51-42 margin, but falters against Democrats compared to her opponent. In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-5, leads with 37 of the vote, followed by former Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz with 25 percent and State Rep. William Tong with 4 percent. Polling results for possible November match-ups: “Congressman Christopher Shays has narrowed the gap with Linda McMahon from 15 points to 9 points.  The question is whether he can catch up by primary day, August 14,” said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz. “In general election matchups, Shays runs neck and neck with either Congressman …

Former Congressman Chris Shays, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Joseph Lieberman, shared his views with the Naugatuck Republican Town Committee.

Chris Shays, the former 4th Congressional District congressman, paid a visit to Naugatuck on Wednesday during the borough's Republican Town Committee meeting. Other guests in attendance during the event included 3rd Congressional District candidate Wayne Winsley, and Tom Scott, a former Milford state senator who was representing senatorial candidate Linda McMahon. Shays spoke about his record, and cited reasons why he could beat Linda McMahon in a primaryand then go on to win the general election in 2012 against Chris Murphy, the 5th District congressman who is running for Senate as a Democrat. Murphy hasn't been chosen to be his party's nominee, however Shays indicated he thought Murphy would likely be the candidate. See our above video …

Yes, I agree. It will be a meaningful legacy of Kathleen's race if they look at the responsibilities of the position and the value the treasurer could add.   more ›

Power to the People

Exercise your right—and responsibility—to vote.

Today is Election Day, and even if the races in your town are uncontested, or you think it’s a waste of time to vote, or you just don’t want to rush home from work before the polls close—think again, please. Given that this year is not a presidential election year, turnout is expected to be lower than usual in most areas, and that’s a shame if such a prediction comes true. We’re in historic times, with record low approval ratings for our national politicians. “Occupy” protests signal the tip of a fractured iceberg of discontent on economic and political fronts. We see political polarization, sky-high unemployment and economic disparity as the triptych setting for our nation’s discontent. At the risk of sounding sappy, getting people vested…

Corbet is the Best Person for the Job

Why would we want less stewardship of our tax dollars when we can have more?

I support Kathleen Corbet for New Canaan Town Treasurer. I think Kathleen's energy, financial and budgeting skills, and knowledge of best practices will enable her, as Treasurer, to make sure we have effective oversight of our tax dollars. Her website is a great place to become acquainted with Kathleen's vision and capabilities. Supporters of our treasurer of 46 years have written letters asserting, in essence, that a) the treasurer position involves no responsibility for financial oversight, b) the Town has not asked our current treasurer to take any responsibility for financial oversight and c) we should reelect him to preserve the status quo. The Treasurer has no policy responsibility, but is responsible for ensuring that payments are …

Kathleen Corbet will work with town officials and for New Canaan voters. Her supporters are right in asserting that the time has past for the town to carry an 'honorary' position, defining it as an 'Officer of the Town', and then bypassing it entirely. Kathleen has offered her expertise as an 'extra set of eyes'. This apparently bothers those wishing to preserve the status quo. The current …   more ›

A New Voice for the Town Council

by Roger Williams

Six years ago I met Paul Foley for the first time. In our first conversation, I started to share with him some of my concerns about the Town Council and its actions. Paul's reply to me was simple and succinct. He advised me to get involved if I wanted to see change. That one conversation has led me to serve on the Fire Commission, the School Safety Committee, the Republican Town Committee and ultimately to where I am today, running for the Town Council of New Canaan as the only Republican newcomer on the ballot next week.  When people ask what I stand for, the first and simplest answer is that I am a fiscal conservative. I treat your taxpayer dollars as the precious resource that they are. New Canaan does not have a limitless tax base nor …

Hopefully you can carry that passion on, not only after the election, but into the next Municipal election cycle. The nomination process is both easy and accessible. Either as a candidate of one of our major parties, or as the standard bearer of a minor party , or even of a party of…   more ›

Proven Leadership You Can Trust

Rob Mallozzi will bring experience, judgment and courage to First Selectman office.

We are fortunate to have someone of the caliber of Rob Mallozzi running for First Selectman. He stands out for his service, commitment and dedication to the Town. He is a tireless worker with a strong moral compass who has been a voice of reason on the Board of Selectmen. Rob has consistently shown the right balance between strength of character and compassion in dealing with the many sensitive issues and disparate points of view which arise in our town. He understands that vigorous debate on issues where there are differing opinions is a healthy form of democracy.    More importantly, he has shown the courage necessary to voice his disagreement when excessive spending and debt threatens our Town’s financial well being. You can trust Rob …
