St. Luke's School's highly successful Rube Goldberg competition held last spring inspired middle school science teacher Kathryn Gerety to create a science and creativity event geared just for middle schoolers. Flight Day was a huge success and accomplished Ms. Gerety's goals of sparking curiosity, creativity and collaboration within grades 5-8. Flight Day was modeled after Flugtag, a popular international competition sponsored by Red Bull in which contestents build and fly zany aircraft over water. For St. Luke's Flight Day, over 110 students formed 23 teams—each team designed and built an aircraft that was to be launched from a 4 foot ramp that was stationed 20 feet in the air. They were given very few parameters and told, "Go build an airplane!"
This video highlights the creativity and ingenuity that arose from their exploration into the physics of flight.
