New Canaan – A proclamation submitted by New Canaan's Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter, NSDAR, is signed by First Selectman Robert E. Mallozzi, III. This marks the 226th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States of America in 1787. Also celebrated is the 222nd anniversary of the first ten amendments know as the Bill of Rights. The U.S. Constitution is the oldest constitution still in active use in the world today and is the basic document of our republic, which protects the individual liberties of all citizens through written law.
The proclamation also marks the anniversary of Constitution Week September 17 through September 23, which President Eisenhower signed into law in 1956. Since Connecticut is the Constitution State, it is especially suitable to celebrate these anniversaries. The proclamation asks citizens to reaffirm ideals held by the framers of the Constitution by protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us by our Constitution. The signed proclamation can be seen in a window off the entrance to the Sleepy’s at 3 Forest Street in New Canaan.
