New Canaan Woman Named to U.S. Lacrosse Panel

NEW CANAAN –  Dr. Claudia Sickinger Harris, a New Canaan-based physician and a longtime active participant in New Canaan’s youth lacrosse leagues, has been chosen to serve US Lacrosse (USL), the national governing body for the sport of lacrosse,  as a member of the Board’s Women’s Game/Interscholastic and Youth Subcommittee.

Dr. Sickinger Harris, a youth lacrosse coach, has shown leadership in the promotion of girls lacrosse, as well as advocacy for safe, healthy youth sports. She said today she was honored to be chosen.

“I am honored and excited to be a part of US Lacrosse's mission to provide important support and guidance to parents, players and administrators of the game.  With the tremendous growth and development of the game of lacrosse over the last 10 years, there has been a notable need for better training for coaches and particular attention paid to the safety and well-being of young players,” Dr. Sickinger Harris said.

Several of the 2014 USL national initiatives undertaken for this group will include the following:

1)     Health and safety concerns at the youth lacrosse level

2)     Issues pertaining to college recruiting

3)     Concerns relating to responsible growth of the girls’ game, including the active recruitment of women to coaching and officiating.

As part of her US Lacrosse national service for the girls’ game, Dr. Sickinger Harris also works with leaders in the boys’ game to address common areas of concern such as player safety and the importance of having trained and certified coaches and officials. Regionally, she will also be volunteering with the Connecticut New York Youth Lacrosse Association (CONNY) to support Girls League Play

Dr. Sickinger Harris is the mother of three children who play the sport and currently sits on the New Canaan Lacrosse Association’s Grievance Committee. She is a USL certified youth girls lacrosse coach.  Formerly, she was Captain of the women’s lacrosse team at Vassar College, and played girls lacrosse at John Jay High School in Cross River, NY.
