Getabout's 9 Drivers & 6 Vehicles Serving Seniors' Transport Needs

Getabout is pleased to announce the addition of two new drivers to the Getabout Service Team.  Dominic "Don" Desio was a driver for the former Bishop Lori of Bridgeport.  Donald Merchant, a retired Greenwich police officer, joined Getabout's driving staff in March.  There are now a total of nine part-time drivers plus the Chief Dispatcher, Judy Fuegner.  Many New Canaan residents are unaware of the scope and size of Getabout today.

Together, the Getabout Service Team has 36 years of experience serving New Canaan.  Getabout drivers are experienced, state licensed, insured, and rigorously trained to provide excellent service to New Canaan seniors and those unable to drive.  Today, Getabout serves with a fleet of six (second large van not shown) well-maintained and specifically-equipped vehicles.

Getabout provides independence and convenience.  The service can be used for most daily activities including banking, shopping, dining, doctor visits or community activities.

In 1980, virtually every community in Fairfield County except New Canaan provided transportation for the elderly and handicapped.  Convinced that there was a need for such service in our community, Nancy Nickerson, the founder of "Barrier Free", a national organization to help the handicapped, was determined to establish one here.  In December of that year, she persuaded a group of civic-minded New Canaanites to form a corporation for this purpose.  It was originally called The Friendship Express, but the name was changed to Getabout in February of 1982.  Sperry De Cew became Getabout's first President.

Getabout has been serving New Canaan seniors and those unable to drive for more than 30 years.  Annually, Getabout provides almost 10,000 rides to the senior community.  In January of 2006, Bob Witt became President and immediately recruited board members to improve upon the already successful operation.

Seniors can call Getabout at 203-972-7433 (203-972-RIDE) and avoid driving and parking challenges for banking, shopping, dining, medical and most other trips.  Operations run Monday through Friday between 8 am - 4 pm and reservations are requested 24 hours in advance.  Patrons describe Getabout rides as a pleasant experience with accommodating and helpful drivers.  Not every town offers the specialized service which Getabout provides to New Canaan residents whether located in private homes, apartments, Waveny or the New Canaan Inn.
