Impact of Government Shutdown on IRS

As a result of the government shutdown the IRS will only maintain core functions such as return processing. As the October 15 extended filing deadline approaches for individuals please note "That filing deadlines remain untouched and payments (inclusive of deferred payment arrangements) are still due on a timely basis.

Approximately 85,000 IRS employees are now furloughed until spending is reauthorized. The following activities will cease:

1)Refunds :-(
2)Examinations :-)
3)Operation of taxpayer services and Centers
4) Operation of the Practitioner Priority Service and
5)The processing of returns that do not require a remittance. The processing of electronically filed returns will continue.

A word of advice. If you are being examined and have a deadline approaching for the submission of information or the 30 day period for dis-agreement with an assessment is approaching "MEET THAT DEADLINE". Although your correspondence will not be addressed or read well after the sequester ends the submission deadline stands.
