On two Sundays in October, the Carriage Barn Arts Center hosted children’s workshops for ages 7-12. After a brief tour of THE BARN and BEYOND exhibition given by Arianne Faber Kolb and Eleanor Flatow, children were given miniature milk cartons, popsicle sticks and other materials to create barn-like structures. Board member Rebecca Stedman helped oversee the workshop with the assistance of student Grayson Kennedy. Once completed their pieces were put on display alongside the exhibited artwork. The children also enjoyed a scavenger hunt, which required them to examine the artwork to solve problems.
Last week, Arianne Faber Kolb and Eleanor Flatow hosted middle schoolers from the John Winthrop and Geraldine W. Johnson schools in Bridgeport, as part of the children’s Peer-Docent Program organized by the Housatonic Museum. The focus of their program is architecture this year and they are preparing to share their knowledge with their peers on guided tours of Bridgeport. Kolb taught the kids in Bridgeport about New Canaan architecture in preparation for their visit to the Carriage Barn Arts Center and the Glass House. During their visit, students learned about the history of the Carriage Barn Arts Center and Kip Farrell’s study of preserved and destroyed barns of New Canaan, while enjoying James Grashow’s cardboard Monkeys and Rooster and the other fabulous artwork on view.
Also last week, Flatow and Kolb gave tours to three New Canaan High School photography classes, who visited the exhibition with their teacher Jeanne McDonagh. While intrigued by the monkeys hanging from the rafters, they celebrated two of their classmates works included in the show (Abigail Geanakos and Hayden Hane) and photographed and wrote about their favorite pieces.
