New Canaan, CT, January 17, 2013   – Chris Schipper, president of New Canaan Land Trust, spoke recently at a Kiwanis Club of New Canaan luncheon (http://www.newcanaankiwanis.org) about the importance of preserving fields and woodlands in order to create wildlife sanctuaries as well as maintain the integrity of New Canaan’s semi-rural character.

New Canaan Land Trust was just voted “Organization of the Year” for 2013 by the New Canaan Advertiser.

The New Canaan Land Trust (NCLT) is an all volunteer non-profit conservation organization dedicated to preserving open space, wildlife sanctuaries and the scenic beauty of New Canaan in perpetuity. As one of the largest property holders in New Canaan, the Land Trust protects and cares for 365 acres of diverse woodlands, meadows, orchards and wetland marshes: 261 acres outright ownership, 48 acres under conservation easements and 56 acres formerly held by the New Canaan Audubon Society.

And, according to Greenspace Alliance, “more than just scenic places that contribute to our quality of life, New Canaan’s open spaces are productive assets that generate significant economic value for our town. They contribute to surrounding property values, and naturally improve the air we breathe and the water we drink.”
