New Canaan Soccer Girls U9 Black Team Extends Undefeated Record

On a beautiful spring day in New Canaan, the hometown girls U9 Black Team delivered a Mother's Day gift of a 5 to 3 victory over the Bethel Maroon Team. Facing their Fall Season nemesis, New Canaan battled hard after Bethel went up 2-0 early in the first half. The Black Team began their scoring when Tessa Cosco passed the ball to an open Ella Imbruce who blasted a shot past the Bethel goalie 23 minutes into the first half.  With the score now 2-1, Imbruce added to her tally just three minutes later to tie the game at 2-2.  The New Canaan defense played tough and held off Bethel's offensive attack for the rest of the half with strong goal tending by Emily Fox.  The exciting game went to half time all even at 2.

The second half began much like the first with Bethel scoring early.  At just 5 minutes into the half Bethel managed to get one past the New Canaan defense.  With a 3-2 deficit the Black Team made repeated runs at the Bethel goal when Ellie Gallois put a shot over the head of the goalie to once again send the game to a tie. With the score 3-3 the defensive efforts of Annabel Fenwick and Rory McCarthy allowed the Black Team to end Bethel's scoring for the day.  The tie was broken 20 minutes into the second half when Emily Tedford's shot found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. With Tedford's goal giving New Canaan the lead, the score was punctuated with an insurance goal from Isabelle Schuh. The game would end in a New Canaan 5-3 victory and extend the Black Team's undefeated record for the season.
