The New Canaan Soccer U9 Girls Black Team defeated the Easton/Redding United (ERU) Team 6-1 on Sunday, September 22. After an exciting win last week at home, the Black Team took to the road and repeated its high energy offensive play, on this spectacular autumn day in Redding. Shortly after the game began, it was apparent that New Canaan showed up to play with the same intensity. The offensive unit controlled the tempo of the game with sharp passing to keep the ball away from the opposing team. Only minutes into the first half, Ella Imbruce succeeded in scoring two quick goals to put New Canaan up 2-0. As the Black Team’s defense proved immovable with Lucia Crovatto in the net, the offense continued its pressure on the ERU team. Maeve Baker streaked down the right side of the field, on a breakaway, to score the third goal of the game. With a 3-0 lead midway through the first half, Tessa Cosco added to the score by netting two goals, with assists from Alexa Crawford and Ellie Gallois. Down 5-0 the ERU Team managed to breach the New Canaan defense late in the first half and score a goal sending the game to a 5-1 half time score.
The second half of play opened with the Black Team focused on defending their four goal lead. Although the offense kept up its pressure, the defense came up perfect by denying the ERU Team any more goals. The defensive zone was controlled by Stella Nolan, Emily Tedford, and Peyton Zaletsky. The goal tending duties went to Maeve Baker for the second half allowing Lucia Crovatto to move to the offense. The second half offense also featured Annabel Fenwick, Isabelle Schuh, Cassandra Warren and Rory McCarthy. As the game clock counted down, Ella Imbruce demonstrated she was not finished for the day when she added one more goal to her total and sent the game to a 6-1 final score victory.
As the New Canaan Soccer U9 Girls Black Team enters the fourth week of regular season play, it will prepare to take on the Bethel Maroon Team at home next Sunday.
