Carol has dedicated years to the historical preservation and documentation of the South Salem Presbyterian Church in South Salem, New York. She found the cemetery in dire need of restoration and felt compelled to create the “Adopt a Veteran” project. The “Adopt a Veteran” project had many components to it. Carol contacted Jonathan Appell, one of the foremost experts in the field of gravestone restoration, to assess the graveyard. His assessment detailed the work needed and the cost of the restoration. The restoration took almost a year and was funded by a private donor.
Since the project needed further funding, Carol set to work and researched all the veteran’s historical information with the help of Lewisboro’s town historian, Maureen Koehl. The biographies were so thorough of the graveyard veterans that they showed where each veteran’s home would have been located in today’s town and what their lives were like up to the time of their death.
There were twenty-nine veterans from the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. Each patron donated $40 toward this project and received a veteran’s biography. At a previous Veterans Day Ceremony, the church placed the grave markers purchased through “Adopt a Veteran” and flags in honor of the service these past veterans gave to their country.
