Susan G. Komen Connecticut Director Speaks to Kiwanis

-- Connecticut #1 in Breast Cancer Incidences --

Connecticut has the highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States,” said Jeanine Gutauskas, Fairfield County Director for the Connecticut affiliate of Susan G. Komen. “This is up from #2 last year,” she continued. “New Canaan is one of the top 20 towns in Connecticut with the highest incidence of breast cancer in the state,” so it’s critical to expand our efforts here.

“Komen Connecticut is an independent affiliate of Susan G. Komen. Komen Connecticut's primary focus is on our local community – on educating the women and men in our state on the importance of early detection, funding free screening services and providing support to those who are diagnosed with breast cancer.” Mrs. Gutauskas explained. “When we say "Keeping it Local", we mean it. Seventy-five percent of the funds we raise remain in Connecticut, and are invested in local breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs across the state. The remaining twenty-five percent is invested in research to find the causes and cures for breast cancer. None of these funds support Komen National,” she added. Komen Connecticut is the largest non-government funder of breast cancer services in Connecticut, funding close to $1 million worth of services each year.

“Connecticut has the highest incidence of breast cancer in the United States, Fairfield County is on a high risk corridor, and New Canaan is one of the top 20 towns in Connecticut with a high incidence of breast cancer.* That’s why the work of Komen Connecticut is so critical to the residents of the state. On May 10th, friends, families, volunteers, survivors and supporters will participle in the second annual Komen Connecticut Fairfield County Race for the Cure® to help combat this statistic. The event will be held at Veteran’s Park in Norwalk and includes a 5K Race, a 5K & 1.5K Walk, Kids Events and a Survivor Breakfast.. Please join us to add your support!” she continued.
