U9 Boys Win Scarsdale Memorial Day Soccer Tournament

The New Canaan U9 Boys faced three tough opponents on Sunday May 25, 2014 in the Scarsdale Memorial Day Tournament, but those opponents were no match for New Canaan who went undefeated and took home the trophy for their bracket.

They faced West Side Soccer out of NYC in their first game.  It was a scoring battle with multiple goals from Tommy Augustine, Connor O'Donnell and Alberto Reyes.  Matteo Cain and Peter Cioffi attacked in the midfield to keep West Side out of scoring position.  New Canaan defeated West Side 6-5.

The second game against the home favorites of Scarsdale was a physical battle.  Aidan McLaughlin and Travis Sturcke were defensive walls and let their opponents get very few shots on goal, but when shots were made Nolan Charlton was up to the challenge, making diving saves and batting the ball away. The highlight of the game was a strong mid-field penalty kick by Travis Sturcke which sailed over the goalie's head.  Connor O'Donnell and Tommy Augustine also contributed to the scoring with Benji Sturcke and Augusto Baldini moving the ball well through the midfield.  New Canaan won this battle 5-2.

New Canaan faced the Mamaroneck White Wolves in the last game which featured one NC goal scored by two players. Stone Anderson and Tristan Burt simultaneously kicked the ball past the keeper.  The game featured strong passing through mid-field from Sebastian McNeil to set up New Canaan's 4 goals.  Mamaroneck's one goal was off an early free kick in the box.  Thanks to strong defense again by Sturcke and McLaughlin and great goalkeeping by Nolan Charlton Mamaroneck never got another scoring chance.  New Canaan won 4-1 to go undefeated and took home the winners trophy in their bracket.
