The New Canaan girls U-9 Red Soccer Team delivered another outstanding performance in their 5-0 defeat of Darien at home this Sunday, to chalk up a 3–0 record this season.
New Canaan came out with a strong offensive push firing several shots on goal. Darien’s goalie was able to withstand the attacks until Caroline Underwood found an opening close to the net to put New Canaan ahead ten minutes into the first half. Saige Hartslief followed up with an impressive breakaway from midfield and got past Darien’s goalkeeper two minutes later to create a 2-0 lead. Goalie Grace McManus stood firm and repelled several hard shots on goal with stand out defense from Nola Kammerer to end the first half with Darien scoreless.
In the second half, New Canaan took control of the pace of play with good passing that kept Darien on defense. Caroline Underwood put on a season best performance rushing the goal from midfield to score her second goal of the game. Kate Caione followed up with another explosive breakaway that put New Canaan up 4-0. Goalie Saige Hartslief preserved the shutout and Katharine Byrne deposited New Canaan’s final goal with seconds left for a 5-0 victory.
