Post-Hurricane Cabin Fever Cures for the Weekend

Tired of feeling powerless? Grab the kids and head out for a low-tech adventure.

 

Pile the family in the car and head over to Compo Beach in Westport. For $20 a carload, you'll have access to the beautiful beach – the Sound is warmest at this time of year – and the huge wooden playscape. Your kids will spend hours frolicking and when you've worked up an appetite, be sure to visit . No ordinary snack bar, Joey's offers include lobster rolls, Philly Cheese Steaks – even hearty breakfasts.


Or how about a tea party at ? There's an adorable child-sized picnic table and chairs, perfect for friends and a few stuffed animals. In the same area, is the wonderful Children's Labyrinth. Follow the directional signage and have fun exploring and learning about wildlife.

Thankfully the winds have diminished, but there's enough of a pleasant breeze to try your hand at kite-flying. has a great selection in all sizes and prices. For those into projectile flight, the toy store carries the ever-popular Stomp Rockets, too. Then head over to for a perfect afternoon of airborne fun.

Stamford's newly renovated is a great indoor option. The children's areas are colorful and beautiful with lots of comupters and games, and comfortable seating where kids can sprawl and read to their hearts' content. You won't want to go home and cook – in fact, some of us can't go home and cook – so head across the street to Lucky's Classic Burger and Malt Shop for a 1950's style dinner.

Hurricane Irene has nothing over the . It's open and running with rides, amusements and amazing food. Go for dinner and have a Pizza Frita – because aren't you sick of grilling all that rapidly defrosting food? Saturday 2 p.m. - 11 p.m. Sept. 3

Finally, don't forget the Martime Aquarium and Stepping Stones Museum in Norwalk – both have power now and are always fun options for a feverish afternoon.
