On warm days like Tuesday, greater numbers of New Canaan residents come to the Recreation Department for family passes to the popular town pool at Waveny.
The pool opens for Memorial Day weekend and then reopens the following Saturday, June 1, for the start of the season.
Typically about 750 or 760 family passes are sold -- though that figure is down from pre-2008 numbers, according to Recreation Director Steve Benko.
"What happened was, the economy went down and a lot of people had to drop out of the country clubs, so they opened up their own membership to people on the waiting lists," Benko said.
So, those families dropped the town pool membership because now they were in at the Country Club, Field Club, Lake Club or whatever.
In all, about 80 families have been lost to the private clubs in the past five years, Benko said.
