OPEN Monday, Dec. 31:

• New Canaan town government closes at 1 p.m.

• New Canaan Public Library closes at 5 p.m. (Darien Library—until 6 p.m.; Stamford's Ferguson Library until 5 p.m.; Norwalk Public Library until 5:30 p.m.)

• Post offices

• U.S. Government offices

• Connecticut state offices (see PDF of 2012 state holiday schedule attached to this article(

• Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (normally closed on Monday).

• Banks (open regular hours unless they've posted signs to the contrary)

• New York Stock Exchange

• Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk (open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

• New Canaan YMCA open until 3 p.m.

CLOSED Monday:

• Transfer Station open regular hours

• Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (not normally open on Mondays)

• Stamford's Ferguson Library)

The following are CLOSED New Year's Day:

• New Canaan Public Library (along with Darien Library and other libraries in the area, including Rowayton Library and Stamford's Ferguson Library)

• Post offices

• U.S. government offices

• Connecticut Department of Motor vehicles and AAA offices

• Banks have the option of staying open or closed — in practice, all or nearly all are closed on New Year's Day (and this is one of the four holidays that even TD Bank is normally closed)

• New York Stock Exchange

OPEN New Year's Day:

• Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk

TRANSPORTATION  on New Year's Day:

• CT Transit, Stamford and Darien bus service, "will operate on a Sunday schedule on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 (New Year's Day)."

• Norwalk Transit—no bus service in Norwalk, and the office is closed

• "On Friday, Dec. 28, we start to gear up for New Year’s Eve. To make sure you get plenty of rest for the big night, we once again offer early getaway service. (See a current timetable or visit our schedules page.)"

• Monday, Dec. 31: "[T]o make sure you arrive wherever you need to be to ring in 2013, we will provide a Saturday schedule with extra service in the AM and PM peak periods, as well as additional inbound trains in the late afternoon/early evening, and our traditional post-midnight late night/early morning service to get you home safely.
