DepARTure: New Canaan High School's 25th Annual Senior Art Exhibition

The night of May 23rd marks a very special moment for a group of New Canaan High School seniors: “DepARTure” the Twenty-Fifth Annual Senior Art Exhibition. This is the largest senior exhibition in the history of New Canaan High School. The school gallery will exhibit senior work and feature twenty-four one-person retrospectives, in a variety of media including clay, drawing, painting, photography, jewelry, graphics, and video. The Opening Party will include live music and complimentary refreshments. The Show will open at 6:00p.m.

The Senior Art Show allows students, many of whom will be attending art school next Fall, to generate a one-person exhibit that is entirely their own creation. NCHS’s senior show is unique in that it challenges any senior to present his or her work inside their own space as a one-person “retrospective” of art that can be drawn from anything the student has created throughout their high school years. The organization of this exhibit is meant to draw attention to each student’s individual portfolio and distinctive artistic style –their personal “voice”. The challenge of evaluating
and displaying one’s own work is exciting and demanding to the artistically talented students.

Molly Fox, Max Aliapoulios and Isabel Glatthorn are coordinating the students responsibilities of planning and organizing the event with the advice given from their art teachers, Jeanne McDonagh, Lisa Floryshak-Windman and Greg Scalzo. The student responsibilities include creating the exhibit's logo and title to the general publicity of the show. The senior exhibit will also give three seniors an
opportunity to have their work selected and purchased for the NCHS Fritz Eager Art Collection. These works of art will then be on permanent display throughout the high school and the NCPS district offices. This art collection began in 1969 in the memory of New Canaan High School art student Fritz (Frederick) Eager. The selection committee is comprised of members of the high school staff and a
committee of outside artists.

The following students will be presented in One Person Exhibits in New Canaan High School’s 25th Annual Senior Art Show: Max Aliapoulios, Christian Atherton, Katherine Barymow, Alexander Bordelon, Griffin Driscoll, Molly Fox, Nicole Giusti, Isabel Glatthorn, Katie Ho, Abby Hersam,
Abby Hoelzer, Lauren Jansen, Cameron Lancaster, Paget Millard, Katherine Moncure, Andrea Mullaney, Dylan Neuhaus, Megan Paul, Ali Rigo, Isabella Scandiffio, Jackie Slemp, Danielle Sorcher, Kellen Tensen, Gwen Van de Graaf.
Five of these seniors, Max Aliapoulios, Christian Atherton, Isabel Glatthorn, Cameron Lancaster and Dylan Neuhaus have been honored as recipients of Gold Key Portfolio
Awards at this year’s Scholastic Art Awards competition.

The art show will be on display through June 12th and is open to the public during school hours 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.
