"Forks Over Knives" Film Screening

On Saturday, September 29, the New Canaan YMCA will host the next screening in its Community Reel Film series with a presentation of “Forks Over Knives.”  The screening begins at 7:00 PM and will be held at the Town Players of New Canaan Powerhouse Performing Arts Center in Waveny Park.  The mission of the Community Reel Film Series program is to bring the community together through true, inspiring films.

The film follows the journey of two doctors, Dr. T Colin Campell, a nutritional biochemist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. Early in their careers, these doctors were inspired by many groundbreaking studies that led to a surprising conclusion: degenerative diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some forms of cancer, could be prevented—and in some cases reversed—by implementing a whole foods, plant-based diet.

“Forks Over Knives” present the health benefits of a whole-foods plant-based diet and how it can dramatically impact our lives. The documentary addresses common diseases that have affected almost all of us such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and several forms of cancer that can simply be prevented and possibly reversed by cutting animal-based and processed foods from our diets.

During the film, cameras follow “reality patients” who are suffering from chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes. These patients are taught by doctors to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet to use as their primary approach to treat their illnesses. The challenges and victories of their journeys are revealed in the film.

“Forks Over Knives” is a powerful statement for the future of nutrition. It is a call to anyone affected in some way by these degenerative diseases to learn that a change of diet can make all the difference. Roger Ebert from the Chicago Sun-Times describes the film as, “A film that can save your life.”
