Local Art Exhibit to Benefit Kasisi Children's Home of Zambia, Africa

On Thursday, November 3, 2011, from 6:00-10:00 pm, at One Art Space of New York City, Project LUYANDO will host its inaugural art exhibit debuting artwork created by children residing at the Kasisi Children’s home in Zambia, Africa.

Founded in 1926, Kasisi Children’s Home is the largest orphanage in Zambia. Under the care of Sister Mariola, there are roughly 250 children living at Kasisi and more than 20% of the children have AIDS. The collection includes more than 40 paintings created by 11 child artists ranging in age from 10 to 18 years old. All net proceeds from the sale of the artwork will directly benefit the Kasisi Children’s Home’s education and outreach programs.

Taken from the Zambian term for love, Project LUYANDO is an art-based initiative dedicated to championing the quality of life for underprivileged African children by providing orphanage support and continued education through all art proceeds.

Under the guidance of two local artists, Mulenga Chafilwa and Stary Mwaba, the children of Kasisi have learned how to express themselves through their artwork while learning the fundamentals of visual art in an interesting and fun way. “This program is important because I believe as we’ve interacted with the kids, we’ve not only tried to be exemplary role models but have taken them away from the daily routine at the home and joked, laughed and had fun while producing art,” says Chafilwa.

Art enhances our lives everyday but for these children, it serves as a means to express feelings when they cannot find the words. This artwork is a bridge for understanding other cultures of the world. “It is such a great opportunity for the kids to showcase their artwork and show us their world through their eyes,” says Mwaba, “These children are talented and need everyone’s support. Project LUYANDO can change their lives.”
