Triumvirate: McKim, Mead & White, Art, Architecture, Scandal, and Class in America’s Gilded Age

Historian Mosette Broderick, who wrote Triumvirate: McKim, Mead & White, Art, Architecture, Scandal, and Class in America’s Gilded Age, will talk about the architectural legacy of this historic firm in America on Wednesday, June 8, 11 a.m. at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, 295 West Avenue, Norwalk. The lecture will be followed by a book signing and luncheon.

Ms. Broderick will explore the role of McKim, Mead & White as the firm pursued its goal of having architecture fashion a nation. In her book, Ms. Broderick, who is a recognized architectural and social historian, examines the legendary architectural firm led by three men, whose combined work made them the greatest architects in America at the beginning of the 20th century.

Charles McKim, William Mead, and Stanford White were a sought-after triumvirate; the architectural firm they founded built houses for America’s tycoons and railroad barons, including the Astors, the Vanderbilts, and J. P. Morgan. The firm also designed and built churches, such as Trinity Church in Boston, and libraries and universities, such as the Boston Public Library, Columbia University, and New York University.
