105-Year-Old Business Closes Doors

The sudden departure of Brandman's Paint and Decorating in New Canaan came with the owner's decision to shut down their operation completely.

 

The 2008 recession and a lack of desire by the fourth generation of Brandman's to continue were factors in David Brandman and Larry Curry's decision to close their family business, founded in South Norwalk in 1907, according to a report in The Hour

"We're always sorry to see any business leave New Canaan," said , "especially one that's been here so long."

She said that overall, New Canaan's retail is "on a roll," with a 4 percent vacancy rate in the category and new businesses expressing an interest in the space remaining. 

Murphy noted specifically the expected March , a women's shoe store, which she said was a category specifically mentioned by respondents in the recent Market Demand Study Report.

Regarding the space at 38 East Ave. left by Brandman's departure, she said with next door, and interest reported in the former Boxwood Interiors location, hopefully that area will enjoy a resurgence.

The Hour reports that the paint stores have been sold to Benjamin Moore who will likely keep the Stamford location.
