Chelsea Piers Connecticut Takes Form

Stamford's new athletic center is set to open this July.

Chelsea Piers is nearing completion and, walking through the construction site, you can now almost picture how it will look once it’s open for business and filled with activity.

“Kids come to camp on July 9!” Erica Schietinger, Vice President of Corporate Communications at Chelsea Piers, said. “It’s been coming together fast.”

Just recently, colorful waterslides have been installed in the warm water play area, topping off a space that is sure to be a hit for recreation and parties alike.

“The warm water pool will be a great place to learn to swim,” Schietinger said. “Kids are always freezing while they’re trying to learn, this will be a much nicer experience.”

Next door, crews are working to tile the Olympic-size swimming pool. A bulkhead allows a section of the pool to be raised to create a large shallow end for summer camps, children’s parties, and other activities that require a large shallow space.

One of the most highly anticipated features of Chelsea Piers is the squash courts — 11 singles and a hardwood doubles.

“Squash is huge in Fairfield County, we’ll also have a “learn to play” package,” Schietinger said.

A gymnastics space will offer classes ranging from "Mommy and Me" movement classes all the way up to competitive teams. In New York, adult classes have proved popular and take place every day in the facility.

The Adventure Center contains a 24 foot rock climbing wall, a trampoline room, five batting cages, and a mini turf field.

“We tried to do windows whenever we could,” Schietinger explained. “In New York, windows open out onto the water, here, they open onto other spaces.”

From the mezzanine, visitors can warm up or enjoy a casual meal between activities. Wi Fi throughout will make it possible for kids to work on homework or parents to get some work done while their children are in classes or at practice.

“I know a lot of hockey parents like to sit close to the rink, but this is another option. If grandma comes to watch, she can sit up here where it’s warmer, have a sit-down meal, and still be able to see the ice,” Schietinger said. “We haven’t announced the restaurant partner yet, but I know it will be a place with a lot of healthy options, but you’ll also be able to get a good burger.”

On the second floor, a 100-yard turf field and seven tennis courts flank the stairs. A terrace—offering great views of the city—will be another option for socializing and grabbing something to eat or drink between activities.
