New Canaan Second Richest Town In Fairfield County
Only Darien had a higher median household income in 2010.
New Canaan’s household earnings are the second highest in Fairfield County and more than twice the county average, according to recent research.
The median income of a household in town is $180,434. That number is down slightly from 2009, when the average income was $182,018.
In its town profiles, updated this month, The Connecticut Economic Resource Center, Inc. (CERC) listed income data for Fairfield County’s 23 towns.

Darien tops the rankings with median household income of $185,619, followed by New Canaan, Weston and Wilton. Bridgeport is bottom of the list with a median income of $36,250.
Though the 2010 median household income in New Canaan was down $1,584 from 2009, the town's rank moved up a spot. The top five in 2009 were Weston, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton, Easton.

'Household' is a term preferred by economists to describe people living in the same residence. "Median" is a way of measuring the average by listing all the numbers in a data set and picking the middle number.
The median income for the state is $65,686 and for Fairfield County is $77,620.
The figures are compiled by CERC DataFinder/AGS and are for 2010.
