Reviewers Give Thumbs Up to Stamford's F.I.S.H. Restaurant & Bar

Where are you going to eat this weekend? Reviewers are buzzing about F.I.S.H. Restaurant & Bar in downtown Stamford (yes, it's a seafood restaurant).

F.I.S.H. Restaurant & Bar at 245 Bedford St., is about three months old and is getting positive reviews from both The New York Times and the Advocate — along with YELP.

In a May 30 review that rated the restaurant "Very Good" (the second-best rating out of five), Patricia Brooks of The New York Times says Fairfield County now has "a really good place that specializes in sparklingly fresh fish and shellfish."

She continued, "The entree that had us most agog was roasted whole flounder, a sizable specimen, with its skin on and its flesh white and sweet."

On the negative side, Brooks said she had no complaints about a serving of mashed potatoes on one dish, while one on another plate was pale gray and "tasted tired."

Stamford Advocate review

The Advocate (in a review published in other Hearst newspapers in Connecticut), pubished a very positive review by Melanie Barnard.

She wrote, "The prices are moderate, with the most expensive seafood choice at $28, and one gets exactly what one wants." Of the non-seafood choices, she said, "absolutely everything we tried was roundly terrific."

Barnard also enjoyed the banana cream pie, "pucker key lime pie," and warm chocolate souffle.

Elsewhere

Diners who rated F.I.S.H. on YELP.com were also positive: The restaurant received 3 1/2 stars out of five from 19 reviews (as of last Tuesday).

With nine votes on UrbanSpoon.com (as of Tuesday), everybody liked the place.

OpenTable.com has 49 reviewers which, overall, give it 4.1 stars out of five. "Give this relative newcomer a try. Excellent fish and shellfish. Can get noisy. Interesting wine list," wrote reviewer Luvthisplace after visiting on May 28.

A little trivia:

  • F.I.S.H. stands for "Fresh, Innovative Seafood House."
  • The location was formerly occupied by "Boca" restaurant, but the owners decided that concept wasn't catching on well enough, so they opted to try for a seafood eatery, which both Brooks and Barnard said has been an area lacking in Fairfield County's restaurant scene.
  • The same owners also operate Quattro Pazzi, practically next door at the corner of Bedford and Forest streets.
