The Year In Review: Local Business

As one door closes, another often opens. While there are still empty storefronts in the New Canaan downtown landscape, optimistic entrepreneurs --- especially restauranteurs --- are planting their flags on Main and Elm.

On Jan. 10, the will present its recommendations at Town Hall. Before they do, here's a recap of commercial comings and goings this year.

Closed in 2011

  • , , , --- New Canaan retail institutions all, disappeared from downtown this year.
  • To the list of businesses that closed their doors add: and as well as restaurants , and Nantucket Greens.

2011 Newcomers

  • Newly opened restaurants: , , , and  plus frozen yogurt shop, .
  • Coming Soon: , and New Canaan's fourth frozen treat shop, .

Trends

  • Restaurant Mecca: The kitchens left bare by departing restaurants have been taken over by newcomers and several spaces formerly home to retailers now offer more options as New Canaan's restaurant scene continues to grow.
  • Retailer Shuffle: While some have closed their door these local businesses have shifted locations, including: , , , and .
  • Chain v. Local: The national chain Talbots is gone, but Sleepy's has moved to town. Newcomer blue mercury is a national chain of small cosmetics stores and Island Outfitters is one of seven New England locations for this retailer. G. Albert and Caren Forbes are both "stand alone" locals.

I just called Staples. This is really disturbing to me. If I don't get a satisfactory answer, IRead More will let people know and I will also decide whether to continue shopping there. I do not like to give my money to unethical businesses.

This has convinced my growing conviction that Patch has moved completely away from any pretense ofRead More being a news source and is simply an electronic bulletin board. By abandoning their prior procedure of approving posts before they go up, they are letting anything go on and then taking them down if they're reported. By then, it's too late: the poster has gotten their message across during the time it's in the lineup. I only check in with Patch occasionally now and so many people in town won't read it at all anymore. I think we need to be honest with ourselves about what kind of a public forum this venue is. This doesn't reflect well on Staples if they are using subterfuge and violating Terms of Use on Patch either.
