An organization that seeks to support families expecting premature babies is holding a fundraiser at a Ridgefield restaurant next week.
The Tiny Miracles Foundation, a Darien-based nonprofit organization, seeks to supplement area hospitals because while the medical needs of families are met, "the emotional and other needs of the family during this fragile time often go largely unsupported," according to the company's mission. The company has satellites in Danbury, Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport Hospitals, and provides NICU parental mentors while offering financial assistance.
On Thursday, Feb. 28, members and supporters of Tiny Miracles will be on hand at La Piazza Restaurant and Wine Bar, located on Route 7 in Ridgefield, near the Wilton town line. There will be guest bartenders, and tips and 10 percent of the proceeds from the bar will be donated to the nonprofit.
The event was organized by Marisela Esposito, who lives in Weston.
"I became involved with TTMF because of my life experiences and felt I could help provide some sort of comfort to other parents dealing with the same issues and feelings of isolation and experiencing the emotional roller-coaster ride that comes along with having a premature baby," Esposito said.
Having lost two daughters in July 2001, who were delivered at 21 weeks, Esposito's son, Dante, was born on March 4, 2003. He was delivered at 25.3 weeks, she said.
"I later discovered TTMF and the wonderful work it does, they reached out to us to get permission to use our 'hands' picture," she said. "When I found some free time, I decided to get involved as a Parent Volunteer Mentor, providing much needed support to new and expecting preemie parents."
Esposito then became more involved in the organization, recently joining its Board of Directors and Gala Committee.
"The blessings I have received from my son has empowered me to be a member of this great organization and my way of 'giving back' to preemie families," Esposito said.
The event—"a mingling event," Esposito said—kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
