Tell us in the comments what type of business you'd like to see in this vacant commercial space in New Canaan.

In "Visions for Vacancies," New Canaan Patch is asking community members—residents, village merchants and visitors—what they'd like to see in the space. Tell us in the comments!

Housed between Bank of America and The Whitney Shop, 84 Main Street currently sits unoccupied in downtown New Canaan. The 832 square foot commerical space is listed for rent for $7,100.

The property is listed by Christopher Sigg of William Raveis

Perhaps I can get mine replenished...

I wonder if an art supply store would be able to generate enough revenue to support the rent on Elm Street?
lpgraphix January 17, 2013 at 10:07 PM
Hi Norm -- At one point we had Empire Studios and a smaller Art store on Elm Street, called Estabrooks.

How about a small "cat house" for seniors??
feo mesics January 18, 2013 at 01:00 AM
i agee with Lucy ... a nice gourmet cheese shop would do well. Is Patch also going to post the opening where Ralph's Rugby shop was??

Justin Reynolds, which property are you referencing here? Is it the former Dunkin' Donuts location at 98 Elm? Or is it the former gallery at 84 Main?

happy girl, that's spot on... where else can you rent retail space for $102/sq foot? The list in the local area starts with downtown Manhattan. You could also get downtown L.A., or prime space in the West End of Boston. It's a big number and not really one that any small shop or artisan baker, cheesemonger or anyone else can afford. At that size, a restaurant could not make it work either. My vision for the vacancy is either an empty storefront or a severely cut discounted price.

I say a cheese shop like we use to have or another Swiss Chalet. Though, I would LOVE to see OTB open there :)

A cheese shop, are you kidding? Do you know how much cheese you would have to sell to make a $7,100. per month rent.

Walter Stewart's has a fantastic cheese selection, for those of you who want to support a local, family owned business.

2000 lbs of cheese @7.50 a Lbs or more Break even point

I like Wally's too. I have friends there. Most stores have cheese sections now. Yet, I like Darien Cheese Shop because they let you sample as much as you want and they will custom cut/weight your cheese, sausage order as well as Bagettes, jams and so many goodies.

also check their outrageous prices ... cheese selection at Trader Joe's in Darien just as good and half the price....or the cheese shop in the square right near TJ's
dave watanabe January 18, 2013 at 09:56 PM
how about a "pop up" place that changes all the time?
Hollywood2 January 18, 2013 at 10:19 PM
How about a cheese shop that sell donuts, wine, art supplies, tattoo's and a little back office action on the side. Oh wait, that's Walmart.
Lauren January 19, 2013 at 10:43 PM
lol YES...that would never happen, im sure...but i love the idea
Lauren January 19, 2013 at 10:47 PM
why not make it a social club..like the Aces..or something..The Wasps is probably more fitting. a juke box, some folding tables and chairs outside..don't ask me how the rent would get paid
Lauren January 19, 2013 at 10:47 PM
we could always use another antique shop...we only have about 5..
Hollywood2 January 20, 2013 at 07:31 PM
I like the social club for Wasps, but we have them already. The new excercise fad is pole dancing. So that would be great. Just need some lights, a sound system and a bar.

My parents used to own the Swiss Chalet, At $7100 per month rent there is no way you could sell enough to survive.
Greg Reilly January 21, 2013 at 06:35 PM
Hi Skip. I must be rusty. What is your formula for calculating the rent per sq ft?
happy girl January 21, 2013 at 09:56 PM
$7,100.00 per month times 12 months divided by 832 square feet equals $102 per square foot.

So much for my couples tanning salon
G. Eastman January 22, 2013 at 01:02 AM
No more restaurants - please.
Lauren January 22, 2013 at 01:17 AM
what about a laundrymat/tanning salon?
Hollywood2 January 22, 2013 at 02:07 AM
What we need is a good tappas bar. A little nibble without much fanfare is alway
Hollywood2 January 22, 2013 at 02:10 AM
Ok, I got it. Let Mike Saunders open an Allstate office there, so we don't have to look at his goofy face everytime we sign onto Patch.
