Week in Review, Feb. 28 - March 5, 2011

On Monday, New Canaan police announced the arrest of Paula L. Halloran and Michael Michelsen for and first degree conspiracy to commit larceny after an investigation that revealed the New Canaan couple had misappropriated more than $1 million dollars from an elderly Greenwich woman for whom Halloran was serving as a financial advisor.  Police said the couple used some of the money to build a vacation home on Block Island.

Also on Monday, announced he is running for First Selectman. Mallozzi has been a selectman since 2007. Jeb Walker, who currently holds the job, said he about his political plans until the 2011-12 budget cycle ends.

The family of Krishna Jayaraman has filed a against Kate and Michael Regan. Jayaraman, 84, was struck and killed on Aug. 18, 2010, by a car being driven by Kate Regan.  And on Tuesday, Regan appeared in court, where her lawyer requested a supervised pre-trial hearing because of the case’s complexity.

On Thursday, the public works subcommittee of the Town Council held a public forum to hear about the possible addition of a sidewalk to Main St. from Oak St. to Farm Road. Opponents cited cost and safety. Proponents cited safety and quality of life concerns. The committee will meet Tuesday, March 8 to  decide on a recommendation to bring to the full Town Council.  

The sidewalk debate was the subject of our first column. Written by Chris Farley, who is a mother of four — she has children in elementary, middle and high school — the column will address issues that matter most to New Canaan families. Watch for Family Matters on Wednesdays at noon.

On Tuesday morning, the first of the long-awaited cars pulled out of the Stamford train station for a trip to Grand Central Station.   have been overwhelmingly positive. So far there is no word on when other new cars will be put into service.
