Amy Carpi, a South School mother, is developing a proposal to bring learning gardens to New Canaan Public Schools with the support of Nourish New Canaan, a grassroots organization dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of nutrition on health and behavior, creating Edible Schoolyards, improving school food and providing opportunities for physical fitness. While early interest is inspiring, it will literally take a village to get this project off the ground, so all members of the community are welcome to get involved.
The first organizational meeting regarding Learning Gardens for New Canaan Public Schools will take place on Wednesday, June 20th at 4:00 pm in the Lamb Room at the New Canaan Library (children are welcome).
The purpose of the meeting will be as follows:
1) To brainstorm the scope and purpose of our learning gardens
2) To create an outline for a proposal to the Board of Education this fall
3) To delegate areas of the proposal that require additional research
Attendees will be invited to define goals for the space, a vision for its use, opportunities to involve relevant community organizations and additional resources worth exploring.
Come one, come all. Green thumbs are not required! Just energy, enthusiasm and a vision of the endless possibilities afforded by school gardens.
