$30k in Valuables Reportedly Stolen from New Canaan Home

A burglary of more than $30,000 in valuables was reported at a Silver Mine Road residence, New Canaan police said Monday.

According to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, a 42-year-old male called to report his patio door was open when he returned home and he discovered the first room had been ransacked. He immediately left the home and called authorities.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the entire home had been ransacked, Ogrinc said. The man left his home at approximately 5 a.m. that day and discovered the mess at approximately 6:15 p.m. when he returned home.

The items taken included pendants, necklaces, a ring and other items not yet inventories. Inventoried items were valued at roughly $13,000 while non-inventoried items were valued at around $17,000, Ogrinc said.

A canvas of the neighborhood by officers turned up a lead when a neighbor reported a mand who knocked on his door asking for a specific address. When the neighbor reportedly told the man that address was a distance away, the visitor changed the address to a closer one.

Ogrinc said burglars typically use a tactic like knocking on the door first to see if anyone is home at a targeted house. She said the suspect was described as a white male, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall, thin and unshaven, driving a dark-colored pickup.
