5 Things to Know: Jan. 18

Numbers have figured largely in New Canaan news in recent weeks.

Snowfall , predicted final , Metro-North , municipal department and tax ... New Canaaan Patch has had good reason to go heavy on numbers in recent weeks.

We've compiled today's "Five Things" in that Pythagorean spirit.

  1. The hockey stick reported from the New Canaan Winter Club was valued at $229229 also is the street number of on Elm Street.
  2. New Canaan resident and Patch columnist 's — a look at national and local psyches following two horrific events in which innocent lives were lost — once again is generating spirited comments on the site. It's also the 16th installment of her column. On the 16th of this month, that same Stewarts Market kicked off a fundraiser for AmeriCares that's designed to aid victims of the Haiti earthquake one year later, as Doug Stewart posted in this . The fundraiser runs through Jan. 30 — .
  3. Speaking of AmeriCares, the global health and disaster relief organization that had its beginnings in New Canaan, many of us will recall that founder Robert C. (Bob) Macauley at his Florida home last month. As our retrospective noted, one milestone in Macauley's remarkable life was the 1972 founding of the Virginia Fibre Corporation, for which he remained chairman for nearly two decades. That year, 1972, was notable on the gridiron because it was the first and only time that an NFL team (the Miami Dolphins) finished a season undefeated and then won the Super Bowl. The New England Patriots fell just shy of accomplishing the feat a few years ago, as some New York area football fans will recall. The Pats, of course, were stopped shy of a Super Bowl run this year, as another sect of New York area football fans likely are aware, and as many New Canaanites predicted in last week.
  4. Two of the town's own football stars, wide receiver Kevin Macari and offensive lineman Conor Hanratty, last week were to the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-State football team. Macari's uniform number is 4 and Hanratty's is 78, a combined total of 82. That figure represents the age, 82, that the great civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., whose birthday was celebrated nationwide over the weekend, on Saturday. It's also the age at the time of his passing of , the town man who was killed tragically last summer after he was struck by a vehicle on Oenoke Ridge, and the age of Tom Scheuer, when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on the same road on the morning of , and thrown 15 feet.
  5. In the Scheuer case, as Patch , a South Salem, N.Y., woman, Margaret M. McDonald, stands accused of fleeing after the accident. She is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Norwalk on Friday, Jan. 21. At 7 p.m. that same day, Jan. 21, the courts at will host an "Adult Paddle Tennis Mixed Social," .
