Another Dog Killed by Coyotes

For the second time in a month, a small dog has been killed by coyotes in New Canaan.

The body of a one-year-old Havanese named Beau was found by its owners Friday morning in the yard of their home on Wing Road, off Ponus Ridge. The attack happened about seven miles from an Oct. 1 mauling that left this reporter's small terrier dead on Benedict Hill Road.

Owner Kendra Seth says her family's dog had been acting unusually agitated all last night, wanting to go outside. Her husband took Beau out at 11 p.m. Thursday, then put the small dog in its crate when the couple retired for ther night. At 12:30 a.m. the couple heard what Seth describes as "terrible sounds" outside of their window, and then the howling of coyotes. Assuming a wild animal had been killed, they slept until 6:30 a.m. when they discovered their dog was missing. Beau's owners believe the crate wasn't properly latched and the dog had slipped outside through a pet door.

About 40 coyote sightings have been logged all over New Canaan since January. Seth says she has seen coyotes numerous times near her home and that activity has picked up in recent months.

"This is a harsh, harsh wake-up call," she said, "I definitely feel uneasy."
