Bobby Valentine To Manage Red Sox: Report [UPDATE]

WCVB-TV reports that a verbal agreement is in place.

According to Mike Lynch of WCVB-TV, Stamford native Bobby Valentine has reached a verbal agreement with the Boston Red Sox to become the next manager of the storied team.

Lynch's Tweet reads: "Red Sox and Bobby Valentine have reached a verbal agreement for him to be the next Sox manager."

Less than a year after , Bobby Valentine is making headlines as he makes a bid for the vacant manager position with the Boston Red Sox.

According to the Boston Globe, Valentine has support from Red Sox President Larry Lucchino and team owners, though other contenders include Tigers third base coach Gene Lamont and Blue Jays first base coach Torey Lovullo.

Valentine since January has served as Stamford's director of public safety, health and welfare.

The owner of a  on Columbus Park in Stamford as well as an  in the city, Valentine said his new job duties would include streamlining communications to the mayor's office from the , , Stamford Emergency Medical Services and the municipal Board of Health.

The Red Sox separated from longtime manager Terry Francona following an historic September collapse this season just past, when the team  during a dramatic final series.

The Boston job is notoriously high-pressure, with the team's rabid fan base and vigilant press.

Here's a soundbite from Valentine's January press briefing in Stamford for the government job that may lend some insight into his qualifications for the Red Sox job: "Everyone knows that I am crazy. And I have been crazy in my way all of my life and I’ve done things my way all of my life and I have been criticized for it and sometimes things have worked out and sometimes they haven’t. I’ve been broke twice in my life and I don’t ever want to be broke again, and I don’t think I will be. I’ve been fired three times in my life and [Stamford Mayor] Mike [Pavia] said he’ll let me resign rather than fire me if he doesn’t like the job I’m doing."
