Community Garden at Grace Farm Takes Shape

What started as a local teen's seed of an idea has grown into something for others in New Canaan to enjoy. 

During the months of May and June, Graham Mink, a sophomore at St. Luke's School, recruited fellow members of Boy Scout Troop 70, classmates, friends from Grace Community Church and teammates from New Canaan Crew to clear a 45 feet by 90 feet area at Grace Farms. This effort by Mink, who holds the rank of Life Scout, was the first step in creating a community garden that will be shared with the town.

"Ever since I became a Life Scout I planned on doing something for my church, and when I first saw Grace Farms I wanted to be involved in creating a garden that would benefit the community," explains Mink. This project will fulfill the last requirement Mink needs to achieve the honor of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in The Boy Scouts of America.

Within the last few weeks, the paddock prepared by Mink and friends was fenced in and planting beds and walkways were added. Currently, tomatoes, red and green peppers, rosemary, dill and basil are growing. There are plans for fall crops as well. Planting and harvesting will be done by volunteers from Grace Community Church.

Mink's creation of a community garden is not only an environment-friendly idea, it's a catalyst for people to help others.

"Graham's project is a great example of living out his desire to serve other people within our immediate community of faith and throughout the town," says Cliffe Knechtle, Pastor of Grace Community Church.
