Community Notice: Avoiding Coyote Conflicts

In light of a recent attack that killed a small dog, New Canaan's Animal Control Officer offers tips for living alongside our wild neighbors.

Coyote attacks on humans are extremely rare in the Northeast, but attacks on pets are not uncommon. Animal Control Officer Mary Kleinschmitt says coyotes may consider medium and large dogs to be a territorial threat. Cats and small dogs are prey.

Tips for Protecting Your Pets and Family:

  • All dogs should be on a leash when out after dusk.
  • Cats should be kept indoors—they are a primary food for coyotes.
  • Do not leave food or water accessible to the outdoors. Keep those garage doors closed.
  • Bang your old pots and pans together when you see a coyote. Coyotes are used to human voices and are not scared off by that sound alone.
  • Teach children not to approach any wild animals or any dogs they do not know—a healthy coyote looks like a small German Shepherd.
  • If a coyote crosses your path, back up slowly, giving the animal room to run away.

Report sightings of coyotes to Animal Control, 594-3510. Be sure to include your address and phone number in your report.
