Community Notice: Campfire Safety

A message from the town Fire Marshal.

Open burning in the State of Connecticut is regulated by the Department of Environmental Protection.  Burning permits are required for residents who wish to dispose of brush or branches that have accumulated.  The burning of leaves, demolition materials or trash is never permitted including "barrel" fires.

Permits are also required for bonfires.  Burning permits are issued by the New Canaan Fire Company #1 on the day you wish to burn.   They can be reached at 203-594-3140.

Many residents wish to have small campfires (not more than 2' x 2' x 2') in their yards which do not require a burning permit.  Following is a list of safety procedures to be followed when enjoying a camp fire:

  • Make sure area around fire ring is clear of combustible materials.
  • Never burn "fireplaces" (chimineas, Coleman type outdoor fireplaces, etc.) on wood decks.
  • Follow all safety and use instructions when using outdoor fire appliances such as chimineas.
  • Never burn if the Fire Danger Level is "High" or "Extreme."  This can be found by visiting www.ct.gov/dep and then clicking on "Forest Fire Danger" in the right hand column.
  • Never leave fire unattended.
  • Keep small children clear at all times - they are very intrigued by fire and must be watched closely.
  • Never use flammable or combustible liquids to start or accelerate a fire.
  • Stay at least 20 feet away from structures.
  • Always have a garden hose or bucket of water at the ready.
  • Never burn pressure treated wood - toxic arsenic can be released through the combustion process.
  • Close windows to your home so the smoke will not set off the fire alarm system.
  • Check to be sure that the space above the fire is clear of branches, etc.
