Domestic Dispute Leads to an Arrest and Fraud is on the Rise

The following information was provided by the New Canaan Police Department. Arrests do not necessarily indicate convictions.

Larceny on Laurel Road

An 80-year old male who resides in Texas but rents out his home on Laurel Road, returned to New Canaan on July 25  to discover that he was missing several items from his home. Among the items unaccounted for were five shirts valued at $50 and an area rug worth $200.

The previous tenant had moved out in June and there were no signs of forced entry. The house was locked. The man declined to pursue an investigation or any charges.

To Nigeria with Love

On August 1 an employee of CVS at 94 Park Street called police to investigate a possible fraud case. The employee was reviewing money gram transactions from an 86-year old female resident of New Canaan.

The employee noticed a pattern of money being sent to Nigeria and Jamaica, and the elderly woman was using different names to send the money out. The woman told police she was donating money to the United Nations fund and believed the money would be sent to her account. Police warned her of a possible scam.

An investigation is ongoing.

Family Dispute Leads to Arrest

On August 2 police received a report of an incident that allegedly occurred on June 24 at the home of Robert Katz, 64, on New Norwalk Road. According to the report, Katz became violent and was throwing furniture around. He hit his wife with large pillows that he had been swinging. The victim did not immediately report the incident out of fear, police said. After receiving the report, an arrest warrant was attained. After failing to reach Katz at his home, police arrested him at his place of employment in Stamford.

Katz was charged with disorderly conduct and third degree criminal mischief. He posted $5,000 bond and his court date was set for August 4.

Vandalism on Oenoke Ridge 

On Aug. 3, a 48-year-old female living on Oenoke Ridge Road called police after she noticed there had been damage to her screen door, which she believed happened three-four weeks prior to her reporting the incident. The resident noticed the screen door had been cut, but there were no visible signs of forced entry.

The woman told police that she believed the damage could have been done in retaliation by workers who she recently let go. In addition, the woman noticed the control box for the property irrigation system had been damaged, with some of the wires reportedly cut.

The woman declined to pursue the matter further.

Rental Car Missing

On Aug. 3, an employee of the Enterprise Car Rental at 32 Cross Street called police after a rental car was not returned in the alloted time. The car in question is a 2011 Silver Chevy HHR with a reported value of $12,000.

A male customer rented the vehicle at 5:50 p.m. on July 20 and was supposed to return it the following day. After several messages to the man went unreturned, the employee of Enterprise filed a complaint with the police and reported the vehicle stolen.

Credit Card Fraud

A 58-year old male resident of New Canaan filed a complaint on Aug. 4, after he discovered that his mother's credit card may have been used fraudulently. Upon reviewing the credit card statement, the man noticed charges in April of $675 to Comcast cable in Florida.

The man also noticed charges in April for $130 to open an account with True.com, an online dating service. The account was subsequently cancelled.

Warrant Service 

John C. Broggy, 39, of Robinhood Road in Danbury was served with three separate warrants which included:

1. Two counts of second degree failure to appear. $5,000 bond for one count, no bond set for the second count.

2. Possession of a controlled substance. $5,000 bond.

Broggy posted $10,000 bond and has a court date scheduled for August 18.

Mason Missing His Tools

A 40-year-old Norwalk man who works for a masonry company out of the same city, filed a complaint after noticing that several of his tools were missing from a Brushy Ridge home where he was working.

Among the items that are missing: five masonry hammers valued at $300 and four masonry chisels worth $200. In addition, the man reported a five-foot level, valued at $100, missing as well. He first noticed the several items missing from the job site on July 23. On July 30, the man discovered other items missing, as well. He reported the missing items on Aug. 6.
