Update: Earthquake Tremors Felt in New Canaan

An earthquake centered in Virginia causes power outages and disruptions along the Eastern seaboard.

Update: 2:55 p.m.

Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department said she felt tremors at the police station from the earthquake this afternoon. She said the New Canaan dispatcher received one 911 call and two calls came in to the routine line with questions about tremors residents felt when the 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck. 

"With regard to the earthquake in Virginia," she said, "I did feel tremors while at my desk. They lasted 10-15 seconds."

Tremors from a earthquake centered in Virginia could be felt in Darien Tuesday afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey described the event as a 5.9-magnitude earthquake centered 34 miles northwest of Richmond, Va.

The quake occurred at 1:51 p.m., according to the survey, and could be felt moments later in New York and Connecticut. According to Pam Flynn in the office, there have been no reports of tremors being felt in New Canaan. 

Minor to moderate tremors could be felt in downtown Darien and were reported at the Darien Library, as well.

Darien Fire Marshal Bob Buch said there were no unusual emergency calls coming in as a result of the tremors, and MTA was reporting no service delays as of 2:30 p.m.

Parts of the White House and Pentagon in Washington were evacuated, according to reports, along with City Hall and numerous other buildings in New York. The Associated Press reports that two nuclear reactors near the epicenter of the quake were taken offline.

The Capitol in Hartford was also evacuated as a precautionary measure. Disruptions in cell phone service were also reported across the Tri-State area.
