Get ready, New Canaan, your Taste of the Town Stroll kicks off in just a few short hours!
After a morning full of thunder and downpours, things are looking up for the annual event, which last year saw more than 800 people strolling trough town visiting vendors to check off locations on a map to win prizes.
"We're very excited. I've been watching the forecast and it looks like things are going to clear out of here in time," said Tucker Murphy of the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce.
Murphy said $6,600 in prizes are waiting for participants this year. Those taking part must visit 12 of the 24 restaurants or merchants on the official map to be eligible for things like $200 gift certificates to restaurants, cashmere sweaters from Ralph Lauren, or the grand prize, a year's membership to Oxygen Fitness.
The food pantry will also receive a donation from goods collected as part of the event. Donations to the pantry can be dropped off at New Balance, one of the four start locations when the stroll kicks off at 6 p.m. The other three are Oxygen Fitness, Choose To Be Happy or in front of the movie theater, which is where Chamber members will be starting.
"It's such a great event," Murphy said. "It's a nice way to come back into town after a summer away and see old friends and catch up."
There will be lots of free food and entertainment available for the duration of the event through 9 p.m. The pop-up park will be set up with live music and many of the non-food merchants have teamed up with restaurants or caterers to have things available for visitors, she said.
Prizes will be announced at 9 p.m. and participants do not have to be present to win. Winners will be contacted via the information they provide when they fill out a form to obtain their maps.
