Fuel Report: Lowest Gas Price Around $3.73

We're all feeling it: Unrest in the Middle East can yield higher gas prices. Let's help each other find the least expensive stations around.

In Connecticut, the average gallon of regular gasoline costs $3.74, according to AAA's "Fuel Gauge Report," with the mid-grade at $3.85, premium at $3.97 and diesel at $4.11.

Things are bad, but could be worse: The highest-ever recorded price for a gallon of regular unleaded in the Nutmeg State was $4.39 — on July 9, 2008.

Still, the current figures mark a rise over last week and last month, with the week-ago prices for the same fuel at $3.65, $3.76, $3.87 and $4.02 — and the month-ago prices at $3.34, $3.45, $3.57 and $3.71.

Amazingly, one year ago, a gallon of gas in Connecticut would cost, on average, $2.91, with mid-grade at $3.16, premium at $3.24 and diesel at $3.16.

If you're planning to fill your gas tank up today, we're saving you the search around town with a list of where you can get the cheapest gas. Here's a look, and be sure to give us tips on cheaper gas in the area in the Comments section below:

Usually go to the Gulf on Post Road in Darien or the Citgo next to Russell Speeder Car Wash on Main Ave. in Norwalk. They're usually about $.30 cheaper than in New Canaan

Gas in New Canaan is such a ripoff that they should be charged with price gauging (or however you spell it) . . . CRIMINAL!!!

the full service prices are even more! its unreal. Hey we are all entitled to make $......its just so hard to fill up here in town.. ..Lets not forget the state and the federal gas charges which i think Add about 75 cents per gallon!!!

I have no problems with the prices charged at the Mobil or Gulf in New Canaan, much like I don't have a problem for the higher prices at our grocery stores. If I don't want to pay it, I fill up elsewhere. If I don't want to pay Walter Stewarts, i'll go to Costco or Stop and Shop if i have time. Same thing. No one is saying grocery store prices are CRIMINAL!. why the double standard?

Try GasBuddy.com. They have an app. I haven't verified these, I have a life, sort of... Gulf on South Ave $3.91. C&H (Gulf) on Main isn'tt on GasBuddy, but $3.86, lowest in town. Darien regular from $3.92 to $3.99 Norwalk 1 $3.69, 3 under $3.80, 15 under $3.89. I was clarifying that the word Canaanite was searching for is "Gouging", which can happen, but I don't think NC gas prices are an example of it, and they certainly aren't criminal... Unless you can substantiate collusion to fix prices. I think NC gas prices reflect "free enterprise" and "capitalism" and "managing price elasticity to maximize revenues". And the behavior of consumers reflects their right to choose, in a competitive marketplace. Shop as hard, travel as far, and pay as much as you want for gas. It's a free country.

JL, this is the first we've talked about groceries, so you cannot logically or accurately infer that there is, in fact, a double standard . . . For the record, I believe Walter Stewart's prices are criminal too. The only reason they and the gas stations get away with it is because they have a captive (and very wealthy) audience, which they completely take advantage of . . . But to Heywood's point about capitalism, it is free enterprise, and they can charge what they want . . . whatever. I rarely shop in town for anything and I don't mind traveling for cheaper gas and groceries. That doesn't change the outrageousness of their prices however.
