Mercedes a Hazard on Main Street?

Here are some photos of inconsiderate, botched, terrible parking jobs in New Canaan. Welcome to a new Friday feature, called "REALLY?"

[Welcome to the first installment of “REALLY?”—a new, weekly feature where we will look around New Canaan, find things that people do that make us scratch our heads, and document them in multimedia on the Internet. Have an idea for next week’s theme? Just email New Canaan Patch editor Lisa Buchman at lisab@patch.com.]

Parking Fouls

We also might call this installment "Parking Fails." A quick look around downtown and we found people had parked their cars where there were no spaces, other vehicles’ spaces and two spaces.

The featured photo here was so offensive that we’re immortalizing the botched parking job as the permanent thumbnail on this feature. REALLY?

We also got a quick video with a 22-year-old Darien woman who speaks to one parking problem.

Most of the information can be found in the captions—feel free to comment or click on “Upload Photos and Videos” yourself to add to this gallery (be sure to include your own caption info).

Michael ... great article and feature ... keep up the good work ... how about getting shots of all the merchant's cars that are parked on Elm, Park, and Main. Brotherhood & Higley real estate agents are long known offenders near their office on Elm ... see parking tickets as a cost of doing business!

Parking Dept. just needs to start handing out tickets to these people. Even if it doesn't correct their bad behavior (they're all spoiled entitled rich people after all), at least the town might be able to collect some funds if the state ever gets around to reimbursing the town its % of fines collected.

Glad you had the idea to write this piece. I have repeatedly observed many of these offenses here in town and could only shake my head at the lack of consideration of so many people who are supposed to be among the most well-educated in the state (Fairfield County has a large number of people with college degrees and above). Clearly their parents failed to teach them some manners though.

"Greenwich may have the worst drivers in the world." I love a block from Greenwich's main one-way drag. Similar to New Canaan's but several blocks longer. Way more opportunity for bad driving and parking. That despite police stationed the intersections directing traffic.
Hollywood2 March 08, 2013 at 04:12 PM
You really can't fault the driver of the white mercedes. You don't know what the spot looked like when they parked.
Patrick Henry March 08, 2013 at 04:44 PM
My apologies for the lack of clarification. I would NEVER suggest taking a picture while driving. That would be as bad as the offenders you are trying to identify. But whilst walking, I'm sure there are plenty of opportunities to catch these folks you mentioned last May in action.
Patrick Henry March 08, 2013 at 04:47 PM
Hollywood2, I thought the same thing until I read the caption. The lady allegedly told the photographer that she knowingly took up 3 spots because she didn't want her car hit.

Angie - What I don't understand is why posters like you and Dave (who shockingly, has not jumped on this story to show his disdain for the townfolk), live in New Canaan in the first place? If you have such a low opinion of the people in this town, why not live elsewhere? Everyone that lives here is not rich and spoiled. There are plenty of people who are kind and caring. There are also plenty of people that are struggling financially. There are bad parkers everywhere. Not everyone parked in New Canaan lives in New Canaan. Bad parking is not exclusive to Fairfield County or New Canaan. I'm with Hollywood2 and loveithere. You don't know what the adjacent spots were like when the person parked there. I've parked in the Morse lot a few times where people on either side of me were at more of an angle than the spot calls for. I pull in at the same bad angle. 2 minutes later those people leave and my car is left looking like I am ignoring the lines. Every situation may not be how it seems when the photo was taken.

New Canaan Cheer Leader: I have to concurr in that drivers here are very good. I do however politely disagree w/you that New Canaan Rocks. This town for the most part has made my life miserable from day 1. I have NO real friends. I am dirt poor and deep in trouble. The town helps everyone else out..but forces me to swim on my own....What a town....What a state (Politely spekaing of course) hey...want to be my friend??? Just friends...do not worry. I could use at least one person in my corner.
Glen K Dunbar March 08, 2013 at 05:06 PM
I have to agree w/Hollywoood too. Some spaces are hard to get in. We do not know what it looked like before. Give the RICH Mercedes person the benefit of the doubt...well at least as far as the parking goes. I am sure this person has $$$$$ galore. I know I do not have 2 cents to my name for the most part

I think I'd take a moment and fuzz out those license plates before posting....

Maybe they had a tire shredded on one of New Canaan's rasor sharp, Belgen block, curbing. $200 bucks a tire I park away from the curb also.
Arthur Sultan March 08, 2013 at 10:25 PM
It is all part of the "entitlement" problem. You see it with the children, who have no concept of manners. You see it with the woman with the over-sized SUV at a Stop sign 3/4 of the way into a main road while talking on the phone. These are the same people whose automobile's you have displayed. "I live in New Canaan and I am entitled."
Ade March 09, 2013 at 02:11 AM
So, Mr. Sultan, how do you explain rude, unmannered children and bad parkers in a poor neighborhood? Once again I am forced to ask, why the hell live here, or spend time here, if you think so poorly of the people in this town? I'm tired of people who post here painting everyone in New Canaan with the same broad brushstroke. Move.

This is all too dumb for me. 26 comments and the article about 14mm bucks spent on town hall had 2. Unreal.

We are featuring a new photo upload of a botched parking job, from Barbara Ann Dunn-Parker. Thank you, Barbara -- great caption. Really?

Patch journalism: Really?

there are crappy drivers and parkers all over the world. we just live in a small town. on another note, for those of you with the navigation beepy thing that shows you backing up and beeps at you before you hit the car behind you - DONT RELY ON THIS! i was in my parked car in the 15min spot at morse court, watching this woman in her suv back up in front of me, with my hand on my horn waiting to signal her, and sure enough, she backed right into my car, enough to make my car lurch. i jumped out and she did too and immediately said "i didnt hit your car!" i was appalled...she looked in her 50s and probably thought i was some irrational girl (im 30, i look 20 though) and kept on insisting that i was in the wrong. i told her she was lucky she didnt leave a mark and i didnt have to call the cops...THAT kind of thing really angers me more than stupid parking jobs. had to go off for a minute there...

J Bauer, this to you from Janis Joplin: " Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends, So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?" Get out the fish oil. Bon appetit.
Canaanite March 10, 2013 at 05:52 PM
Many times I park on Elm and all the humongous SUVs pull into the spaces next to me at warp speed, and always 2 inches from my driver's side and passenger doors - simply because they couldn't be bothered to go a little slower and center their vehicle in the parking space (which wasn't designed for those giant boats anyway, granted!). Where is the guy with the camera then? :-)
Canaanite March 10, 2013 at 06:03 PM
I think this column is GREAT! People ought to be shamed in behaving more responsibly . . . A car is not a toy. Too bad names and pictures aren't posted too . . . It seems like no one has an intrinsic sense of consideration anymore . . . People will do anything if no one calls them out on it.
Baffled Resident March 10, 2013 at 07:41 PM
I'm guessing that the driver of the Benz had a passenger and parked away from the curb due to the pole and the condition of the brick at the curbline. It still doesn't excuse being so far off the curbline though.
Wait...what? March 16, 2013 at 03:12 AM
Journalism? NOT really. Funny as all get-out? Yes, oh Mercedes, color TV, night-on-the-town-buying Lord yes. Keep "Really?". (Yes. Really :)
Alexander A. Amarilios March 16, 2013 at 07:27 PM
Where did you get the idea that only rich people are parking offenders? I'll tell you a secret: They are of all income levels!
S Dogood March 29, 2013 at 01:11 PM
How is it possible to parallel park and take up three spaces? I does not appear to be possible.
