Merritt Parkway to Be Resurfaced Between New Canaan, Stamford

Sen. Carlo Leone announced the project on Tuesday.

Sen. Carlo Leone announced Tuesday a construction project anticipated to generate 201 jobs beginning June 2013 when the Merritt Parkway undergoes resurfacing.

The stretch of the parkway between Stamford and New Canaan will be the focus of the project, which is approximately 6.4 miles of road.

Additionally, 13 bridges spanning the parkway will undergo repair and updated safety improvements, Leone said in his announcement.

"The Merritt Parkway is one of two main highways in Southwest Connecticut, an essential part of our infrastructure and a major artery of our local economy," the senator said. "We cannot afford to have the Merritt fall into disrepair. This resurfacing effort will support 201 construction jobs, and upon its completion, will help to reduce traffic and serve as a corridor to fuel future economic growth in our region."

The resurfacing  is part of the larger Merritt Parkway Improvement Plan, which is intended to address and upgrade safety issues along the entire 37.5 mile length of the Parkway.  To date 19 miles of the project have been completed.

This latest portion of the effort will be advertised to contractors in February of next year. $9,600,000 in state bonds will be issued to finance the work, in addition to federal funds.
